Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple is a famous religious temple located in Lansdowne of district Pauri Garhwal. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is one of the Siddha Peethas. As also, here many small waterfall of water flows. There is a kund in the temple premises, it is believed that this kund was dug by 'Goddess Lakshmi'. The holy water of this kund is used in Shivling. According to legend, there was a monster named Tarakasur, who had done penance at this place to receive the boon of immortality from Lord Shiva. Seeing the harsh austerity of Lord Shiva Tarakasur, Tarakasur gives a boon of immortality. With the passage of time, Tarakasur starts doing wrong work in the earth with the boon of immortality and begins to kill Sages. Seeing this, Sages requested Lord Shiva to ask for help. To war with Tarakasur, Lord Shiva and mother Parvati gave birth to Kartik. As soon as Kartik started to kill Tarakasur, then Tarakasur started praying to Lord Shiva and apologized. Then Lord Shiva forgives her and said, In Kaliyug, people will worship your with of the Lord Shiva name. Hence this place named of "Tarkeshwar Mahadev". There are thousands of devotees coming every year to darshan this temple. Every year, special worship is organized in the temple on the occasion of Mahashivaratri.
