This Temple is a famous ancient temple located in Jageshwar of Almora district. This temple is the largest and oldest temple in the Jageshwar Dham temple premises. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. In this temple is worshiped as Savior from Lord Shiva's death.

The word Mahamrityunjaya is composed of three words. 'Maha' means great, 'Mrityun' means death, and 'Jaya' means victory. Lord Shiva is the only God who has always triumphed over death. Death never defeated Lord Shiva. For this reason he is known as named of Mrityunjaya. The most huge and beautiful temple in the temple group of Jageshwar Dham is famous by the name of Mahamrityunjaya Mahadev Ji.

It is believed that Yamraj the god of death is afraid of coming to this temple premises. It is believed that it is the only temple of "Lord Shiva" in the form of "Mahamrityunjaya" in the world. It is said that these temples were built during the period of Katyuri dynasty. On the walls of this temple, 25 inscriptions are found, which are from the about 7th-10th century. This inscription is in Brahmi script and Sanskrit language. This temple has a great religious significance. This Temple is one of the main religious sites of Jageshwar. During the of Shivratri and Shravan month, many devotees gather here.
